Morning Routine

My first chance to sleep in and not worry about a thing was spent being an awesome boyfriend instead. Tania had to wake up at 6 a.m. sharp to get ready for work. Rather than just roll over and tell her to keep the light off, I got up with her. While she put on her make-up, I made her toast with pumpkin butter and cottage cheese with mango jam. And, needless to say, coffee as dark as sin. With nutmeg. Yum!

You know you'd make her breakfast too.

I’ve done that before. After her extremely successful St. Patrick’s Day shindig, I got up with her and made her hashbrowns (and I make GREAT hashbrowns).

When I put together her quick breakfast, something occurred to me. I don’t really have a morning routine!

I feel like having one really helps with dragging yourself out of bed in the morning, half-awake and still having to stumble out the door to get to class or work or wherever you’re going while the sun’s still coming up. You can run on auto-pilot while doing these things because you do them every morning. But it’s not something that I’ve managed to reinforce. During the week, my classes start at 9 a.m. (MWF) and 8 a.m. (TuesThurs). During the weekend, I either work at 7 a.m. or 3 p.m. You’d think with a mostly consistent schedule that requires me to get out of bed pretty early, I’d have established some sort of morning habits.

I guess not!

For typical school days, I try to get as much sleep as possible. That usually means getting up a half hour before my class, getting dressed in a rush, and riding my bike over to campus. I normally don’t have work in the mornings, so weekends consist of sleeping in til 11 a.m. and then staying put until I need to get ready for work, maybe shifting over to my desk to do homework or (even more productively) surf the Web.

I want to use my spring break to get as much rest and relaxation as possible… but I ALSO want to reestablish some semblance of a morning routine. I just need to give myself some time to get out of bed, concoct a simple breakfast (or elaborate if I give myself enough time?), brew some coffee, and head off to start my day. That way I’m not leaving in a rush, and I’m focused and fed. Like Tania was this morning when I sent her off to work today!

It will probably require me to get up earlier for the latter half of the week, instead of just sleeping the week away. Worth it, hopefully.

Now, if only my mornings could be THIS exciting…
