About Me

Me! – Oct. 2011, Golden Gate Park, Japanese Tea Garden

If you’re reading this, you’re probably curious about who I am and why I maintain this blog.

My name is Jordan Hovis. I am 23-years-old (born December 14, 1989) and living in San Diego, California. I attend San Diego State University (Go Aztecs!), where I am majoring in International Security and Conflict Resolution with an Emphasis in Conflict Resolution/Cooperation, and minoring in German and Linguistics. I have been a student there for almost six years now, and will finish in the seventh. I moved to San Diego in 2008, for college. I didn’t really get to know my new-found home until 2011, when I got my first car. There is still a lot I need to see and explore. I was in the Marching Aztecs for three years, but unfortunately I don’t have time for it these days. I work at a Hilton Hotel in downtown San Diego as a full-time front desk clerk.

I grew up in Costa Mesa, California. I had massive anger issues when I was young, though you wouldn’t guess so now, and I had a decent childhood surrounded by family that loved me. My elementary, junior high, and high school were all on the same street, on the border between Costa Mesa and Newport Beach. I could ride my bike just about anywhere, and I still do when I go home. The only time I did anything of note to the entire student body of my high school was when I sang the National Anthem at my graduation. I was in marching band, in which I played clarinet, and I was in choir, in which I was lead tenor. I dabbled in many social circles.

I have a passion for writing and reading. I hope to someday have a book published. I currently have no ideas on what it would be about. I’m hoping to get back into my writing, as I’ve been a little busy and burnt out to continue with it these past few years of college. I have too many books and not enough shelves. I also have a fondness for history. Old-timey photographs and museums are awesome, and I definitely enjoy reading up on things that happened awhile ago. I am also really into science fiction, particularly Star Wars but other things too. My latest obsession has become language, having completed a minor in German and experimented with Farsi and Spanish.

I’m a social butterfly, as I’ve been told multiple times by multiple people. I like hanging out with friends and going to parties, whenever possible. I try to be personable and like to give people a shoulder lean on or somebody to talk to. I do my best not to complain about or judge what others do, though sometimes I fail in that. At one point, I was a tremendous gossip (and occasionally, still am). I like keeping in touch with people via social networking (see Contact Me).

I wish I could travel more. I’ve been to San Francisco only three times. I visited a good chunk of the California missions when I was 8 or 9 with my dad, and did a tour of the United States with my grandparents when I was 10. That being said, it’s been awhile and I probably didn’t appreciate it as much as I should have at the time, and I should dig those pictures out. I went to Greece in 2006, before its economic crisis, and cruised theĀ Mediterranean. I intend to see the whole world before my mortal frame gives out.

So that’s me!

As for why I’m blogging… I originally started this blog as a project for a Journalism class. For some reason, I didn’t enjoy nearly as much when I was assigned to write a blog post once a week about whatever I wanted. Maybe it was because my theme was ‘life improvement’ and nothing had improved. Hmm. But now, I’ve had all sorts of positive changes! And I like to share them, and keep track of the things I’m still working on.
